down.

.

your phone takes your thought, or not your thought exactly, a compressed approximation of it, the photograph of a thought, and turns it into electrical impulses and then into light. the light goes into a cable, or a radio wave, or bounces off a satellite 35,000 kilometres above your head. the path changes with the day, the traffic, the weather, the arrangement of infrastructure that nobody in the conversation has ever thought about.

your words pass through a building in Navi Mumbai that is kept at eighteen degrees. people work there. they look after the machines. they don't read the messages. they couldn't if they tried. WhatsApp alone carries more than a hundred billion messages a day.

your I miss you goes through that building alongside someone's grocery list and someone's suicide note and an ad for running shoes. the building doesn't know the difference. it never has.

I keep thinking about that.

.

the void is not dark.

I got that wrong for a long time. Lovecraft assumed that kind of indifference was hostile. I don't think it is.

.

a guy in Mumbai sends a breakup text. his phone dies before he sees if it went. he charges it at a CCD for forty minutes. when it comes back on: nothing. no reply, no read receipt.

she saw it. she'd just turned her phone face-down.

the message crossed 300 miles in nine milliseconds. it was the last four feet that took forever.

the void delivered it perfectly, at the speed of light. the forty minutes, the assumption of cruelty, the pride that set into something permanent, that was all us.

we fail each other through the void and then blame the void.

.

when you type a word and press send, the word dies a little at every step. the thought in your head isn't the signal in the cable, and the signal isn't the pixels on their screen. you felt something. you squeezed it into language. language became text, text became light, light travelled, light became text again, text became language, and language became a feeling on the other end.

a feeling near yours. a cousin of it. a very good photocopy, maybe a perfect one. you'll never know, because there's nothing to hold it up against.

every digital conversation is two people alone in separate rooms, reading photocopies of each other's thoughts and assuming they're the originals.

we built the most sophisticated communication system any species has ever had, and "I cannot feel what you feel" is exactly as true as it was before.

the void didn't make that distance. it just lit it up.

.

The Void Has No Hands.

it can't hold anything, or put anything down, or reach for you. it receives and stores and transmits and that is all. nobody in the history of undersea cable engineering wrote a spec that said this system should understand what it carries.

and yet someone strung a cable across the Arabian Sea. someone looked at thousands of kilometres of water and said, I have something to say and this distance isn't going to stop me. every server farm, every cell tower, every blinking light in every quiet building in Chennai and Navi Mumbai and Hyderabad was built because someone couldn't bear the gap.

the void was built by longing.

it can't know that. knowing needs hands.

but we know. we built it because we couldn't stand the silence, and now we live inside it and have forgotten that the whole humming, light-pulsing cathedral of five hundred-odd cables is a love letter. from us, to the distance, saying no.

.

I don't know what to do with that. Nobody ever does until it's gone.

And it doesn't show thirty years from now, when a younger woman looks at her the way she looks at older women today, with that brief, quiet horror of recognising what's coming for all of us.

That's what photos are for. They leave all that out.

.

I'm not saying this to be cruel. I'm saying it because nobody else will.

The whole world is built to help you not think about it. The creams, the filters, the angles, the lighting, the surgery. An entire economy running on the agreement that we'll all pretend time isn't happening.

And it works, for a while. You post the photo, you get the hearts, you feel seen. And you do matter. It's just that the photo was never the reason.

.

What I wanted to ask her, and didn't, because it would have ruined the evening and probably our whatever-this-was, was this:

What happens when it goes?

It will go. The heads stop turning and the likes slow down. You walk into a room and nobody's eyes follow you anymore, because they're following someone younger.

What's left then? What did you build underneath the beautiful?

.

I think about this more than I should.

I think about the women I've known who were taught before they could speak that their value was their face and their body. The ugly algorithm of fuckability, which they never chose but learned to optimise for, because what else were they supposed to do?

I think about my mother looking in the mirror and saying things about herself that would be abuse if anyone else said them.

I think about the girls I grew up with who knew by twelve that their beauty was a currency, and spent the next twenty years earning and spending it without noticing the exchange rate was always dropping.

Some of them did everything right. They maximised the asset, used the attention and built a life on being wanted. Then the ground under it shifted, through no fault of theirs, because time is undefeated.

.

I watched her smile at her phone as another heart came in.

She looked happy. She looked beautiful. She looked like someone standing on a balcony, enjoying the view, not looking down.

.

I'm not above any of this.

I look in the mirror too. I flex when no one's watching. I puff up my chest for photos. I have my angles and my lighting and my own small negotiations with decay.

The difference is I lost that negotiation early. Average face, average body, nothing that was ever going to be currency. So I had to build something else and find my worth in other rooms.

I like to think being plain when you're young is a gift, because it forces you to become someone who doesn't depend on being looked at. It's possible I'm just telling myself that. If I'd been beautiful, I might be doing exactly what she's doing.

.

What I do know is that the face you have right now is the oldest it's ever been and the youngest it will ever be again.

This is the peak of something. Maybe not of beauty, but of this particular version of you. Tomorrow's version will be older by a day and different by a degree. It's happening while you read this.

.

I wanted to tell her that she isn't her face, or her body, or the photo, or the eyes that follow her into rooms. She's whatever remains when all of that leaves.

Something will remain. The question is whether she's met that person yet. Whether she's built her, and given her anything to stand on when the rest falls away.

Because it will fall away, for her and for me and for everyone reading this who thinks they're the exception. There's just time, and what you did with it while you were looking in the mirror.

.

She put her phone down and looked at me.

"You're quiet."

"Just thinking."

"About what?"

I almost told her.

I almost said: I'm thinking about your skull. The bone beneath the skin. I'm thinking that everything I'm attracted to right now is temporary, and I don't know how to hold desire and decay in the same hand.

I almost said: I'm thinking about my grandmother, who was beautiful once, who tells me this like it's a secret, like she needs me to know she was worth looking at too, before the world decided she was invisible.

But I didn't say any of that.

"Nothing," I said. "You look nice."

She smiled and picked her phone back up. I meant it, and I was still thinking about the skull.

The Story of "I’m Good"

She asked how's life. The sheets were tangled at our ankles, her head somewhere near my shoulder but not on it. We were two strangers who had stopped being strangers for about forty minutes and were now slowly becoming strangers again. Intimacy has a half-life.

I think she wanted something to hold. Some proof that this meant something, or proof that it didn't have to mean anything and that was okay too. Or maybe she just wanted noise to fill the silence before one of us reached for a phone.

So I told her a story.

A girl once asked me, "What's up? How's life?"

I said, "I'm good."

The conversation ended.

I stopped.

Sydney waited, and then waited some more. She turned her head slightly, like she was checking whether I was serious.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

She laughed, not a real laugh, the kind you do when you're confused but don't want to be rude about it. She was probably wondering what kind of man she'd just slept with. That's fair. I was wondering too.

"That's not a story," she said.

"Why not?"

"Because nothing happens. There's no... I don't know. No point. No twist. It's just nothing."

"Yeah."

"So why'd you tell it?"

I looked at the ceiling. There was a crack running from the light fixture to the corner. Someone should fix that. No one would.

"We've heard thousands of stories," I said. "Lived inside some of them without knowing. We know what a story is supposed to feel like. Beginning, middle, end. Someone wants something, struggles, changes. There's a shape to it, something that makes the time you spent feel worth it."

"Right."

"So when I tell you a girl asked how's life and I said I'm good and that was it, you feel cheated. Where's the drama? What's the takeaway?"

She didn't answer. She was listening now, actually listening, which is rare. Most people are just waiting for their turn to talk.

I sat up a little. Not because I needed to. Something in me was starting to unspool and I didn't know how to do that lying down.

"When she asked 'how's life,' there was a gap. Maybe half a second. And in that half-second my brain opened a file. Not a file. Everything. Every piece of data I've collected about what it means to be alive right now. And it asked me: do you want to tell her the truth?

"And the truth is not a sentence. The truth is a flood.

"The truth is I woke up this morning and checked my phone before I opened my eyes. I saw news about people dying somewhere far enough away that I'm allowed to feel sad but not obliged to do anything, and I scrolled past it. I got an email from a company I gave my data to without reading the terms, and they're selling my patterns to someone who wants to sell me something I'll buy to feel like a person.

"The truth is I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about having opinions about brands. About having one-sided relationships with strangers on screens. About knowing more about celebrities' divorces than my neighbours' names.

"The truth is I'm tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. I have everything my grandparents dreamed of and something still feels missing, and I can't tell if that makes me ungrateful or just awake.

"The truth is there are children who will never taste clean water, and I know this, and I still bought a coffee this morning that cost more than their families make in a day, and I didn't think about it until just now, and I probably won't think about it again tomorrow.

"The truth is I watched a video of someone's house getting bombed and then a video of a dog on a skateboard, and my brain gave them the same weight, because that's what the feed has done to me.

"The truth is I don't know if I'm a good person. I don't know if that question even means anything anymore.

"That's 'how's life.' That's what was behind the door she knocked on when she made small talk with me in that coffee shop or that party or wherever the hell it was."

Sydney was quiet.

"So what did I do with all that?"

I let the question sit for a second.

"I ran the calculation. The same one everyone runs, all day. Does she actually want to know? Can she carry this? Will saying it help anything, or will it just make us both uncomfortable, so that we have to perform some kind of recovery and the whole thing turns into work instead of just passing?

"So I compressed. I took the flood and crushed it into two words.

"'I'm good.'

"And she said 'good!' with that little lift at the end, and we smiled at each other, and we both walked away relieved that neither of us had to be real.

"That's the contract. I don't make you carry what I'm carrying, you don't make me carry what you're carrying, and we both pretend we're not carrying anything. And the wheels keep turning."

Sydney shifted beside me. I felt her looking at me but I kept my eyes on the crack.

"So what's the story?" she asked, softer now.

"The story is that a girl asked how's life, and I had an entire universe inside me, and I said 'I'm good.' And she believed me. Or she pretended to. Or she knew I was lying and was grateful for it. And we both kept moving.

"That's everyone's story, every day. Billions of people carrying their own floods, compressing them into small talk, agreeing that 'I'm good' counts as an answer.

"Maybe that's mercy. Maybe it's the only way we get through the grocery store checkout line without falling apart. It's also the loneliest thing I can think of. All of us walking around, drowning quietly, smiling at each other."

The room was very still.

Sydney reached over and put her hand on my chest. Not romantically. Like she was checking that I was solid.

"What story were you hoping for?" I asked.

She didn't answer for a long time.

Then: "Something with a point, I guess."

"Everyone wants a point."

"Is there one?"

I thought about it.

"Maybe we tell stories to pretend there is. And sometimes the pretending is enough."

She took her hand off my chest and looked at the ceiling too.

"That's sad."

"Yeah."

"But also kind of..."

She didn't finish, and I didn't ask her to.

We lay there for a while. The half-life went on. Soon one of us would check a phone, and one of us would say they should probably get going, and we'd compress this night into something small enough to carry. A story we'd never tell anyone, or one we'd tell everyone with everything that actually happened stripped out.

For now her foot was touching mine under the sheet, and neither of us moved it.

the problem with words

এক: শব্দের back to. She was dancing like the loneliness drugs hadn't reached her yet, like she still remembered what it felt like to lose yourself in music and bodies and light. I was already medicated by then. Everyone was. But the way she moved made me feel like I was missing something.

She came out of the crowd and asked me for a cigarette. I had one. While I fumbled for my lighter she leaned in close enough that I could smell her, something like cut grass and rain under the club's recycled air, and said, "I like you."

Just like that.

"I never say that to people," she added, taking the cigarette from my fingers. "Even people I actually like." Then she turned and went back into the crowd. I didn't know her name yet. It was Mai.

I found her twenty minutes later at the bar. I came up behind her and put my hands on her waist, and she leaned back into me like we'd been doing this for years. The DJ dropped into something slow and heavy, and the world shrank to the two of us swaying there.

Her apartment was one of those old converted units in the tech district, clean lines and smart glass, the kind of place that adjusts the lighting to your mood. She had a cat named Honey who sat on the kitchen counter and watched us kiss our way to the bedroom with the face of a disappointed aunt.

I was doing tech maintenance in the district back then. Mai was studying xenobiology at the university, one of those fields that only exists because we got far enough out to need it. Late at night she'd talk about how life adapted to different gravities and different light. I didn't always follow, but I loved watching her face when she explained.

We had three months before her first mission. Three months of her apartment and Honey's stares and learning how her body fit against mine. By the time she came back I'd quit the job. Life was moving too fast to stay in one place, so we moved in together.

After that she went out every few months, and each time she came back with something. A chunk of moon rock that glowed faintly in the dark. A fragment of meteor in colours I didn't have names for. A vial of dust from a planet with three suns. Souvenirs, she called them. Proof she'd been somewhere I couldn't follow.

The last thing she brought me was an egg. Blue, smooth, cold to the touch, about the size of both my hands cupped together. Bigger than any egg I'd seen outside a museum.

"Take care of this for me," she said. She was leaving again in the morning.

I never saw her again.

We'd seen things together I couldn't have imagined before her. Nebula storms from the observation decks. Bioluminescent forests on a moon with no name. Nights where the stars were so thick it looked like someone had spilled light across the black, and she'd hold my hand and we'd just watch.

After she left, I couldn't do it anymore. Relationships, I mean. My parents wanted me to settle down and find someone new. I tried once or twice. But the part of me that knew how to reach people had gone quiet, not all at once, just gradually, like a room where someone keeps turning off one more light. The loneliness drugs helped. They made it easier to be alone. Everyone was on them by then anyway.

I kept the egg on a shelf in my quarters. Every new station, every new contract, it came with me. I told myself she was still out there doing whatever impossible thing she'd gone to do. The egg was proof she'd existed, proof we'd been real.

I kept it for a year and forty-seven days.

Then, one morning, I heard it crack.

It was so quiet I almost missed it. I was running diagnostics on the server arrays when I heard something that didn't belong, like ice giving way on a frozen lake.

I'd stopped thinking of the egg as anything but stone. For a year it had sat there, a monument to someone who wasn't coming back. Now there was a fracture running down its side, and as I watched, another line split the blue.

I forgot to breathe.

The shell fell away in pieces, and I don't know how to describe what I felt. It was as if every numb part of me woke at once and the drugs stopped working all together. Maybe it's what becoming a father used to feel like, back when people did that the old way.

It was small and blue-feathered, with eyes too large for its head. It looked at me, and I understood that something alive had been waiting in the dark all this time while I treated it like a gravestone.

It opened its beak. No sound came out, but I felt something anyway, a vibration in my chest, a pressure behind my eyes. I wondered if it spoke in frequencies above or below human range. Whatever it was saying, the meaning was clear enough.

It needed me.

The habits came quickly.

It liked to nibble the hair on my legs while I worked, tugging gently with its beak, moving methodically from ankle to knee while I tried not to laugh. I'd be in the middle of a code review and it would be grooming me like I was another member of its flock.

It slept on my bed. It would hop up and land on my chest, heavier than something that small had any right to be, and stare into my eyes. Then, apparently satisfied, it would turn and settle into the crook of my arm.

I tried bird seed first, the standard nutri-pellets for exotic species. It looked at the bowl, looked at me, and swept it off the table with one wing.

Fish it loved. I had to special-order frozen supplies, but the way it tore into them, gleeful and a little savage, meant I couldn't say no.

I started calling it Duck. Not creative, but it fit.

Two months in, I realised the drugs had stopped working.

I'd taken loneliness suppressants for years. Everyone did. You took your dose, the hollow feeling went away, and you could live in your isolation without it eating you. For people like me, alone on server stations light-years from anyone, it was simply how you got through a shift.

Now I'd lie awake with Duck curled against my ribs and feel things. Grief. Mai's absence, like a bruise I kept pressing. I doubled the dose and nothing changed. The emptiness was back, except it wasn't empty anymore. It was full of her.

I started remembering things she used to tell me. How time runs differently when you travel far enough out. How she'd go on a six-month mission and come back having lived eight months, a year, more. How every time she left, she was moving away from me in time as well as space.

And the egg. How long had it been waiting? If she'd found it years before she gave it to me, if time ran differently where she'd been...

Duck's feathers glowed sometimes when it breathed, a soft blue-green pulse washing across my quarters with each breath. I'd watch it and wonder what kind of species this was, what they did, what they were for.

I didn't know what I was for anymore. Duck seemed to. It chose to sleep pressed against me. It groomed my leg hair and knocked over bowls, and it looked at me like I was worth looking at.

I realised the drugs had done more than kill the loneliness. They'd killed the need to understand.

For over a year I'd accepted that Mai was simply gone, on a mission somewhere. The drugs made it easy to shrug, to keep the egg on the shelf and never ask why she'd given it to me.

Now I couldn't stop asking. Where had she gone? What mission was worth never coming back from? Why the egg?

I went through the files she'd left on our shared drive, research I'd never bothered to open. Communications logs, mission briefings. Standard xenobiology surveys, sample collections, routine reports.

Then I found a folder labelled "Paradox Species - DO NOT SHARE."

Inside were hundreds of files. Images of creatures that looked almost like Duck. Video logs of Mai on a planet I didn't recognise, watching them in their habitat. And notes, pages of them in her handwriting. The first line read:

"They're dying. Not from disease or predation. They're dying because they've forgotten how to need each other."

I read through the night with Duck asleep on my lap.

She'd found them on a distant moon, a species of highly intelligent birds. She spent months watching them.

They used to be born live, she wrote. They lived in families, with parents who raised their young together and flocks that moved as one, their whole society built on constant contact.

Over generations, that changed. They evolved to lay eggs instead, eggs that could survive alone and didn't need immediate care. The young hatched into isolation and never learned to need each other the way their ancestors had. Each generation was more comfortable and more alone than the last, and now there were almost none left.

Her notes got more urgent toward the end. Phrases underlined twice, three times. "Same pattern." "We're not learning from them, we're following them." "The drugs are just the beginning."

I put the tablet down because my hands wouldn't hold it still. She'd seen our future in theirs.

The video was dated three days before she left. Mai in what looked like a research station, her hair shorter than I remembered, dark circles under her eyes.

"Hey," she said, with that crooked smile I'd forgotten I missed. "If you're watching this, the egg hatched. I wasn't sure it would. Time works differently out here. It's been six months for you, but almost four years for me. If I come back now, you'll be gone. And if I come back later..." She looked away from the camera. "There won't be anything to come back to."

She took a breath.

"The loneliness drugs weren't an accident. They studied species like Duck's, species that went extinct through comfortable isolation, and they saw a blueprint. Isolated people don't organise. They don't push back. They just consume and comply and slowly disappear."

"I have proof. But if I bring it back, they'll bury it, and me, and you. So I'm staying out here, documenting everything and sending it through channels they can't trace."

She leaned closer to the camera.

"The drugs won't work around it. I don't know why, something in its biology. You're going to feel lonely and it's going to hurt and you're going to want it to stop. Don't let it stop."

She blinked hard, twice.

"Take care of it. Let it take care of you. I love you. I'm sorry."

The video ended.

I stopped taking the drugs three days later.

The loneliness came back in a wave, sharp and total. I wanted them again. My hands shook reaching for the bottle, and Duck knocked it off the counter before I could open it, then sat there looking at me.

I let myself miss her properly. All of it: the impossibility of her stuck in a different stream of time, the anger at what they'd done to us and to everyone. It hurt like hell.

Duck stayed close. It groomed my leg hair and slept against my ribs, humming that low vibration through both of us.

A week later I did something I hadn't done in years. I opened a comm channel to another maintenance worker three stations over and just talked. About nothing. About Duck. About how the drugs had stopped working for me.

"Mine too," she said after a long pause. "I thought it was just me."

"It's not just you," I said.

Duck made its silent sound, and I felt it in my chest.

I didn't know if it would change anything. Probably not. The government was too big, the numbness too comfortable. But Mai had given me something that wouldn't let me settle into being alone, and I wasn't going to waste it. I'd keep talking to people, keep feeling things when they hurt, keep looking after this creature that shouldn't exist but did.

The next night I opened the channel again. She'd left it open too.

How to Be The Hero of Your Story

Most of us are supporting characters in our own lives. toilet, or in a meeting where you're pretending to take notes. Scrolling because you're bored with your actual life, looking for something - anything - that makes today feel like it matters.

I see you.

You had that dream again last night, the one where you're living a different life. In the dream you actually did the thing instead of just thinking about it. You were brave, and the story was about you.

Then you woke up and checked your phone. Same notifications, same routine, same supporting role in someone else's production.

Let me guess - you're waiting for permission to start living. For the right moment, the right amount of money, the right person to tell you it's okay. You're waiting for someone to cast you as the lead in your own life.

They're not coming.

You know this. You've known it for years. But knowing and doing are different countries, and you don't have a passport.

Right now you're nodding along and assuming I'm talking to someone else, those other people who aren't living their truth. Not you. You're just... what? Preparing? Strategizing? Waiting for your moment?

Stop lying.

You ate lunch at your desk again today. You said "I'm fine" when you're drowning. You agreed to plans you didn't want, laughed at jokes that weren't funny, pretended to care about things that bore you, and stayed quiet when you had something to say. Every one of those was a supporting character's choice.

You think being the hero means some big dramatic moment. Quitting your job in a blaze of glory, finally telling that person how you really feel, moving to Bali, starting the business, writing the book.

It's smaller than that, and harder.

It's saying "actually, I disagree" in the next conversation where you'd normally nod along. It's leaving the party when you want to leave, instead of when it's polite. It's ordering what you actually want to eat, not what makes you look healthy or fun or low-maintenance.

It's the next choice, the tiny one you're about to make as soon as you finish reading this.

But you won't, will you? You'll feel inspired for about thirty seconds, maybe screenshot this to read later, and then go back to your regularly scheduled programming as an extra in your own movie.

I'm not being mean. I'm being honest, the same way you need to be.

When was the last time you surprised yourself? When did you last do something that wasn't in your usual script, and become the plot twist in your own story?

You're so busy being who you think you need to be that you've forgotten you get to choose.

That meeting you're dreading tomorrow? You could just... not go. That relationship that's been dead for two years? One conversation would end it. The dream you've been "working on" for a decade? You could start it today, in the next hour.

But you won't, because heroes make choices and supporting characters make excuses.

Which one are you making right now?

You're still reading, which means some part of you knows I'm right. Some part of you is screaming "YES. GOD. FINALLY. SOMEONE SAID IT." And the rest of you is already building the defense, listing all the reasons your situation is different and special and complicated.

It isn't. You're scared, and that's fine. Heroes are scared too; they just act anyway.

Here's what's going to happen. You'll finish this essay and feel something for a moment. Then your phone will buzz, someone will need something, life will interrupt, and you'll slip back into your supporting role like a comfortable pair of shoes.

Unless the next time someone asks how you are, you tell them the truth. Unless the next time you want to leave, you leave. Unless the next time you have something to say, you say it.

These are small rebellions, and they're enough to start with. You don't need to change everything at once. You just need to change the next thing: the next word, the next choice.

But it has to be now. Not tomorrow, not when you feel ready. Now, while you're uncomfortable and scared and every cell in your body is telling you to close this and go back to scrolling.

The hero's journey was never about becoming someone else. You've always been the main character. You just keep giving your lines away.

Take them back. Start with the next sentence out of your mouth, and make it true enough that it surprises you. Then do it again, and again, until being the hero isn't something you're trying to do. It's just who you are: the person who chooses, and who lives their actual life instead of performing one.

Your supporting character era can be over, if you choose it to be.

The next line is yours. What are you going to say - and more importantly, what are you going to do after you finish reading this sentence?

Thanks for reading Texture Of Tomorrow! themselves. The rope rebels. Your hands cramp into shapes they've never made.

You watch someone else's fingers loop, thread and pull through the familiar pattern, and yours respond with the grace of frozen sausages.

But somewhere between the fifteenth and fiftieth attempt, something shifts.

The rope begins to speak and your fingers slowly learn its language. In that learning you find something modern interfaces have made us forget: struggling with a thing is one of the ways we come to see it.

We live in an age of frictionless design. Our tools learn our habits before we know we have them. Spotify learns our taste faster than we do, Gmail finishes our sentences, and our phones unlock by recognising the specific geography of our faces. Everything bends to us and anticipates us. We've built a world that never makes us foreigners to our own fingers, and that is exactly what we've lost.

Consider the photographer in a darkroom, hands in developer, feeling for the edge of the paper in absolute darkness.

She cannot see her work, so she imagines it through touch and times it through breath. Leave the print in too long and the shadows go to mud; pull it too early and the highlights blow out. She becomes the light meter. Her lungs become a clock.¹

Now think of Instagram's one-tap filters. Valencia, Mayfair, Ludwig. Each one takes ten thousand hours someone spent learning how light actually behaves and turns it into a button.

The manual transmission is another example. Everyone who learned on a stick shift carries the muscle memory of failure: the shudder of a stalling engine, the smell of a burning clutch, the specific humiliation of rolling backward on a hill while someone honks behind you.

They also carry something else, an understanding in the body of how power moves through metal and how momentum builds and breaks. They know the car as a physical system, not a service.

Today's CVT transmissions find the right gear ratio on their own, with no human input, no human error and no human understanding required. The ride is perfectly smooth, and the driver learns nothing from it.

You might say this is nostalgia talking. I don't think it is. There's a reason people who learn by doing tend to understand more than people who learn by watching. When we struggle with a tool, we don't just learn the task. We learn something about whoever made it, and about the material itself.

Medieval apprentices didn't simply pick up techniques from their masters. After seven years of watching hands shape clay, they had absorbed how to move with deliberation, how to read wood grain before cutting, how to wait for iron to reach the right colour. The clumsiness was the curriculum.²

Modern software tutorials teach us to be efficient operators instead. We learn the shortest path, not the terrain. We memorise keyboard shortcuts without ever wondering why a function lives where it does, what metaphors shaped the logic, or which human decided that "save" belonged under "file" and not "edit."

A chef teaching knife skills doesn't start you on a food processor. She hands you a dull knife and an onion.

You cry from the vapours and from the frustration, and from the small cuts that teach you where your fingers end and the blade begins. Slowly you learn the onion's grain, how much its layers resist, the particular sound it makes when you cut it right. The dull knife teaches you pressure, and the tears teach you the angle.

Now meal kits arrive with the vegetables already chopped into perfect portions, and AI recipe generators know your allergies but can't tell you why ginger wakes up carrots or why salt makes chocolate sing. It's all very efficient, and you finish the meal knowing nothing you didn't know before.

We're raising a generation on tools that never push back, and it shows up everywhere.

We give students AI tutors that adapt perfectly to their learning style, forgetting that wrestling with a teaching method that doesn't suit you builds a flexible mind. We auto-tune away bad pitch, forgetting that hearing your own bad pitch is how you train your ear. We GPS our way everywhere, forgetting that getting lost is how you learn to look around.

The word "empathy" comes from the German Einfühlung, "feeling into." It first described how people viewing a work of art project themselves into it, how we physically mirror what we see.

But you can't feel into something that never resists your touch. You can't empathise with a system that shapes itself perfectly around you. A tool that does everything for you leaves you a weaker user of it.

So, to designers, educators and anyone who builds the tools that shape people: put some friction back.

Build in moments where the tool asks the user to meet it halfway. Make your onboarding a little obtuse now and then. Let the interface speak its own logic sometimes instead of guessing yours. Give it a skill curve, the kind gamers know, where getting good means understanding how the system thinks, not just what it spits out.

Duolingo almost gets this right with its deliberately repetitive exercises, but it adjusts to your mistakes too quickly. A better app would sometimes insist on its own rhythm, slow you down when you want to rush, and make patience part of the lesson.

For AI systems, this could mean a copilot that occasionally declines to finish the task and walks you through the why instead.

"I could write this function for you," it might say, "but let's build it together so you understand what each line does."

Yes, it's slower. That's the point.

For physical products, it means resisting the urge to hide every bit of complexity. The tools people love most teach you through use. A Swiss Army knife shows you its logic while you fumble with it. A cast iron pan wears in its own patterns and needs a little ritual of care. It gets better with age and attention, not in spite of them.

The bowline still teaches what no quick-release carabiner can: that security comes from understanding the forces on the rope, not from trusting a mechanism. The rope knows things your fingers have to learn, and you only get fluent in a system by first being clumsy in it.

We've spent decades building tools that speak our language perfectly. Maybe it's time to build tools that teach us theirs, tools that make us students again and put us back in a beginner's mind.

Your fingers remember every knot they've ever learned to tie. What will they remember of tomorrow's tools?

¹ The darkroom timer's tick becomes a heartbeat. Ansel Adams talked about "visualising" the final print before he ever touched the paper, a mental picture built over thousands of failed attempts. Digital photography's instant feedback swaps that deep visualising for trial and error. We shoot a hundred versions instead of imagining one.

² Medieval guilds didn't require seven years of apprenticeship because the techniques took that long to learn. It took that long to become someone, through watching, failing and absorbing. The slowness was deliberate: it filtered for dedication and made sure knowledge passed on with its context, not just its content.

This is the first dispatch from Texture of Tomorrow.
